French Embassy Welcomes New Cultural Counselor Antonin Baudry
We are pleased to announce the arrival of the French Embassy’s new Cultural Counselor Antonin Baudry who replace Kareen Rispal.
Dear Friends,
If music was the highlight of July and August, this month it’s dance! Several of France’s most innovative choreographers will be performing in New York venues from mid-September to mid-October. The program offers an interesting look at important currents in contemporary French dance. This will be a rare opportunity to see many of these artists performing in the US, some for the first time ever:
Jerome Bel
Sept 18 – 19 at Joyce Theatre
Bouchra Ouizguen
Sept 22 - 23 French Institute Alliance Française
Christian Rizzo
Sept 30, Oct 1 -2 at The Kitchen
Daria Fain
Sept 30, October 1-2 at Danspace Project
In light of this occasion, the Arts Department of the Cultural Services of the French Embassy has chosen to launch its first edition of Dance Dialogues: Conversations between American and French Choreographers, featuring a series of published interviews between artists on both sides of the Atlantic. This is the first in a series of conversations that aim to highlight artistic and cultural exchanges.
On a different note, c’est la rentrée scolaire! This ‘back to school’ season we are very pleased to announce the opening of two new bilingual schools: The New American Academy and The French American Charter School. Each school offers an innovative approach to bilingual education. We support their initiatives and wish them great success in the coming school year!
Other events around town include several contemporary gallery openings featuring well known French artists. On September 10 at Sean Kelly Gallery, Laurent Grasso will present his first New York solo show since he received the Centre Pompidou’s Marcel Duchamp prize two years ago. Also opening September 10th, a group show entitled The Space between Reference and Regret with 9 artists including Daniel Buren and Philippe Parreno at the Friedrich Petzel Gallery.
Whether or not you live in the New York City area be sure to catch the national premiere of the The Lost Hero . This PBS documentary tells the intriguing story of the Marquis de Lafayette, a controversial figure from the French and American revolutions. Check your local listings for details.
Bonne rentrée et à bientôt!
