Chateaubriand Fellowships

The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs offers Chateaubriand
Scholarships for research in France on French literature, cinema, the humanities, the arts, history, philosophy, political sciences. It also offers scholarships for research in science and technology to conduct research in a French laboratory.
Chateaubriand Fellowships allow you to:
conduct research in France and/or
work under the supervision of a professor in a French university or research institution and/or
attend seminars of a specific professor at a French university
The online application is available between October 15th and December 15th by going to the Chateaubriand website
:: Eligibility ::
Candidates must be pursuing a Ph.D. in the Humanities or Social Sciences
Candidates do not have to be U.S. citizens but must be enrolled in an American university*
Candidates must obtain a letter of invitation from a French university,
a Grande Ecole or a research institution before applying
No particular level of French is required, though most students need a certain level in order to conduct their research
* French citizens are not allowed to apply

Allowances of about €1300 a month, plus a "book allowance" of about €300
A round-trip ticket to France
A health insurance while in France
30 days of per diem for travel in France for research purposes

Application online: October
Procedure: Fill out the application online; Upload a 3-5 pages proposal;
When the confirmation number appears online, send the required documents (transcripts, letter of invitation from a Professor in France, a letter of recommendation from the US adviser, etc.).
No document will be accepted before the completion of the application online.
Application deadline: December 15th
Evaluation process: from January to February
Decision announced by the beginning of April
The fellowship begins in fall and ends 9 months later

quality and originality of proposed research project
choice of an appropriate French professor for the candidate’s research proposal
letters of recommendation
letter of invitation
curriculum vitae, list of publications, and academic transcripts
:: Evaluation process ::
December: verification of eligibility and documents received
classification by subject
January:
all proposals are evaluated by one French and one American expert that
specializes in the area of study of the candidate
End of March: a jury
meets at the Embassy in Washington. The jury is made up of one
professor from France and five professors from different regions in the
U.S. and each member of the jury specializes in a different field.
