The Book Department of the Cultural Services of the French Embassy offers financial aid to American institutions wishing to invite and host French authors for readings, signings, and symposia. Click here to see our authors on tour at the moment.

In the list below, you will find French authors who are already scheduled to visit the USA. Please read their biographies to determine if they are suitable for your needs.

Philippe Forest

Dates: Feb 20 - Mar 1, 2010

Born in Paris in 1962, Philippe Forest is the author of numerous essays on art and literature and of three novels, all published by Éditions Gallimard: L’Enfant éternel (The Eternal Child, winner of the Prix Femina for a first novel in 1997), Toute la nuit (All Night Long, 1999), and Sarinagara (winner of the Prix Décembre in 2004). He is currently a professor of literature at the University of Nantes, specializing in avantgardes. >> more

Joëlle Jolivet

Dates: Apr 1 - 20, 2010

Joëlle Jolivet grew up near Paris. She studied graphic design before illustrating her first published book in 1989 Danger Bonbon! written by Christine Brouillet (Souris Noire, Syros, 1989). Today, her works have been exhibited around the world and the books she has collaborated on have been translated in many languages. Joëlle Jovilet is an internationally acclaimed author and illustrator for children’s books. >> more

Philippe Djian

Dates: End of Apr - Beginning of May, 2010

After graduating from a school of journalism in Paris and doing a series of odd jobs, Philippe Djian began writing a few short stories and novels. He gained fame with Betty Blue (37°2 le matin), the first of his highly acclaimed works of fiction to be translated into English and the basis for the award-winning film by Jean-Jacques Beineix. It remains a best seller book and cult film nearly twenty years after its first release in France. >> more

Atiq Rahimi

Dates: End of Apr - Beginning of May, 2010

Born in Afghanistan in 1962, Atiq Rahimi fled to France in 1984 to escape the Soviet coup. There he has made a name as a writer and filmmaker of exceptional note. He has been heavily involved in Afghan cultural life since the offensive, particularly in the creation of a “Writers’ House” in Kabul. >> more

Jean-Philippe Toussaint

Dates: End of Apr - Beginning of May, 2010

Born in Brussels, the son of a journalist and a bookkeeper, Jean-Philippe Toussaint studied in Paris where he received an advanced degree in contemporary history from Sciences Po. He taught in Algeria from 1982 to 1984. His first novel, La Salle de bains, was hailed both by critics and the public who appreciated his incisive and uncluttered style in depicting his special universe with a great economy of words. >> more

Eric Hazan

Dates: Mar 29 - Apr 11, 2010

Eric Hazan is an editor, translator, and the founder-director of the independent publishing house La Fabrique. He also helped form the Franco-Palestinian Medical Association and served as a volunteer doctor in a refugee camp outside Beirut. He will be presenting the translation of his book L’Invention de Paris. >> more

Christophe Bertossi

Dates: April 1-18, 2010

Christophe Bertossi is the director of the "Migrations, Identities, Citizenship" research program at the Institute for International Relations (Ifri) in Paris. He obtained his Ph.D. in Political Science in 2000 from the Institute of Political Studies in Aix-en-Provence (France). He also lectures in political science at Sciences Po (Paris). Previously, he was a Marie Curie Research Fellow at the Centre for Research in Ethnic Relations, University of Warwick (UK).>> more

Olivier Abel

Dates: Apr 13 - 25, 2010

A former student of Michel Henry, Emmanuel Levinas, and Paul Ricoeur, Olivier Abel first taught abroad in Chad, and then for four years in Istanbul, Turkey. In 1984 he became a Professor of Philosophy and Ethics at the Faculté Protestante de Théologie in Paris where he still teaches. He is the author of nine books and has edited various works on hermeneutics, memory, John Milton, Pierre Bayle, and Paul Ricoeur. >> more

Christian Salmon

Dates: Sept 15 - Oct 15, 2010

Christian Salmon was born in Marseille in 1951. He is a writer and researcher at the Center for Research for the Arts and Language at the CNRS in Paris. The founder of the International Parliament of Writers (promoting creative freedom), he is the author of Tombeau de la fiction, Devenir minoritaire and Verbicide and is a columist for Le Monde.>> more

François Dosse

Dates: Sept 16 - 27, 2010

François Dosse is an intellectual historian and professor at the IUFM Créteil, the Institut d’études politiques de Paris, and the Centre d’histoire culturelle des sociétés contemporaines de l’université Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines. He is the author of numerous books including a two-volume history of structuralism. >> more

Judith Revel

Dates: End of September , 2010

A former student of the E.N.S Fontenay-Saint Cloud, Judith Revel is a professor of philosophy at the University of Paris I Sorbonne. She is a specialist of Michel Foucault and of political philosophy from 1945 to 1980 (Foucault Deleuze, Derrida, Clastres; Merleau-Ponty, Lefort et Castoriadis…). From 1992 to 1998, Revel taught at the University of Rome III, (Department of Communications and Languages). >> more

Virginie Despentes

Dates: postponed

Virginie Despentes was born in Nancy in 1969, and now lives in Paris. Virginie Despentes held various jobs (bookseller, translator freelance writer …) before publishing her controversial novel Baise-moi in 1993. It was followed by Les Chiennes savantes, Teen Spirit and Bye Bye Blondie. Her books have been translated in many languages (English, German, Spanish, Finnish…)>> more
