Hey Hey My My

North American Debut

Hey Hey My My arrives in NYC for first ever US shows. First album available on Other Music digital platform. Inspired by Neil Young’s famous lyrics, Hey hey my my, rock and roll will never die…, Parisian friends Julien Garnier & Julien Gaulier deliver fresh country tinged pop songs which otherwise bares no relation to their hard rock namesake. Hey Hey My My is a superbly instinctive blend of enthusiasm and melancholy.

In the late 1990s, the atmosphere was electric in Bordeaux, France. Grand cru wines were still on every table, but from the quays to the estuary, rock had taken over the city. Guitars being the main weapons electric, of course. And one guitar in particular, a single object passed back and forth from one had to the next, from brothers to friends, from Julien G. to Julien G, like a stroke of destiny. Hey hey my my, rock and roll will never die…

JULIEN GARNIER & JULIEN GAULIER from the get-go, they made these lyrics by Neil Young their mantra, long before realizing that this legendary title would seal their musical union definitively. Inevitable night-time rehearsals gave way to underground concerts for a burgeoning fan base. They composed less for others and focused on finding their own sound. One day, THE concert took place, the set that no one would soon forget. The crowd was won over: HEY HEY MY MY was forged. The reference to Young, whose overly serious lyrics and extremely stripped-down style was left by the wayside, Rock and roll will never die.

HEY HEY MY MY is a superbly instinctive blend of enthusiasm and melancholy. Above all, it represents the explosive energy and deceptive lightness of simple folk, as if to give more space to its words which propel straight for the heart. In all cases, the bands love for hookable ballads always has the same exhilarating effect. We leave Julien Garnier and Julien Gaulier with a smile on our lips and a tune in our heads.

’While they share a knack for hook-filled melancholy with the great Shakey, in fact their music is quite a bit more pristine than most of Mr. Youngs output. At times the self-titled debut reminds us of a band like Doves, with acoustic guitars bolstered by simple, powerful rhythm tracks that are so subtly assembled its tough to tell what is live and what is looped, resulting in laidback, groove oriented folk-rock that also draws on American indie influences like Magnolia Electric Co., or even Becks more sincere stuff, to great effect. Available only in their native land on the cool Sober & Gentle imprint, the band is starting to make some ripples in the U.S., and we imagine that this is not the last you will hear from Hey Hey My My.’ _ OTHER MUSIC

’HHMM experiment with thought-provoking melancholy, but with their beautiful harmonies, bright guitars and sometimes downright chipper vocals, HHMM keep their melancholy light. While at first it may sound like youve heard all this before, HHMM keep things interesting with clever breaks and by imposing a European vibe on these heavily American-inspired tunes.’ _ KEXP
