Jane Birkin in Concert at La Maison Française!
At the age of 20, Ms. Birkin appeared in “Blow-up,” Michelangelo Antonioni’s scandalous film that received much buzz at the Cannes Film Festival. In 1969, she became inseparable from the famous French singer-songwriter, actor/director Serge Gainsbourg. Their life together became a musical legend when they recorded “Je t’aime moi non plus.” In this album, Ms. Birkin sang four solo tracks, others in duet with Gainsbourg. The record sold a million copies in a matter of months and in 1975 was adapted into a movie.
After her separation from Gainsbourg in 1980 and third marriage to film director Jacques Doillon, Gainsbourg and Birkin continued to communicate through music. Gainsbourg, suffering from the separation, confessed this to her discreetly through “Baby alone in Babylone.” In 1990, Gainsbourg dedicated a new album to Birkin: “Amours des feintes.” It was to be his last, as he passed away shortly after the album’s release. In 1998, Jane recorded “A la légère,” a recording venture, which she described as ’total infidelity.’ She invited 12 composers to write 12 original songs, each inspired by Gainsbourg.
Throughout her career, Jane Birkin has recorded over 17 albums. Her most recent releases include the 2009 "Jane Birkin au Palace," a Live Album recorded at the eponymous theatre in Paris last March, and the 2008 EMI release “Enfants d’Hiver.” She has appeared in over fifty films and has remained a sex symbol for over forty years.
Ms. Birkin has sung on behalf of Amnesty International, made a short film for the battle against AIDS, and she continues to support the Federation of Human Rights (FIDH) activities through her many performances and appearances.
