"New Yorkers on the Subway" by Jeanne Verdoux
Exhibit at the Frederieke Taylor Gallery
Artist Statement:
Simple line drawings on paper, still or animated, my work creates a bridge between traditional drawing techniques and more contemporary practices such as video, sound, typography and installation. The ‘New Yorkers on the subway’ project started in 2002 and is still in progress. Using the train as an art studio, I have been observing and drawing random people in everyday life travelling on the MTA trains. My interest is to explore human nature as well as attitudes and trends to create a portrait of the city. The portraits are drawn in black ink on subscription cards from the New Yorker magazine. They are 4x6 inches. There are 100 New Yorkers, 50 New Yorkers have been bought by private collectors in NY and Paris.
Why New Yorker subscription cards?
Because I grew up in Paris with parents who subscribed to the New Yorker Magazine. Because I like to draw over typography and bar codes. Because I recycle. Because these people are New Yorkers.
