Winners of the Prix Louis Delluc

Award-winning French films include works by Robert Bresson, Maurice Pialat, Alain Resnais, Eric Rohmer, Claude Sautet, Jacques Tati, and more

From April 16–28 BAMcinématek, the repertory film program at BAM Rose Cinemas, presents Winners of the Prix Louis Delluc. Each year at Le Fouquet’s restaurant on the Champs Elysées, the same spot where Jean Seberg sold her New York Herald Tribune in Breathless (Jean-Luc Godard, 1959), an esteemed group of film critics gathers to choose the best French film of the year. The award was founded in 1937 in honor of Louis Delluc, an innovative filmmaker—associated with the “first avant-garde” in France (also referred to as “impressionism”), along with Germaine Dulac, Abel Gance, Jean Epstein, and others—and a pioneer in the field of film criticism and theory. He also founded the first organizations for cinephiles, called “cine-clubs,” and is credited with coining the term “cineaste.” The prestigious Prix Louis Delluc is highly regarded in France, deemed more important by many than Cannes’ Palme d’Or.
