Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait
Oct 24–30, A Week-long Screening
Directed by Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno
As part of the Next Wave Festival, BAMcinématek presents ZIDANE: A 21ST CENTURY PORTRAIT, a visionary meditation on French soccer star Zinedine Zidane. Acclaimed visual artists Gordon and Parreno transform spectacular footage of Zidane—recorded by 17 cameras at a single match between Real Madrid and Villareal—setting text over the images and blending stadium sound with an ethereal score by Scottish band Mogwai. The result is a mesmerizing experiment with cinematic space and time, and an arresting study of a sports icon.
