US Premiere
Sonia Weider-Atherton: At the Beginning, Monteverdi

As Part of Crossing the Line: FIAF Fall Festival 2008

As its title suggests, At the Beginning, Monteverdi (Au commencement Monteverdi) came to be through cellist Sonia Wieder-Atherton’s fascination with the work of Monteverdi. Particularly affected by the composer’s duets, with “their harmonic modernity, their sense of story and drama,” Wieder-Atherton wanted to hear these interpreted by two cellos, and so began to transcribe these pieces.

Little by little, the transcribed music began to resonate with another, temporally distant world–that of contemporary music. As she worked, these duets of Monteverdi wove themselves into a curious blending with the works of Berio, Dusapin, Dutilleux, and Kurtag for solo cello. Wieder-Altherton places Monteverdi’s music in an unlikely musical constellation, at once redeeming the old while illuminating the new.

The premiere of At the Beginning, Monteverdi took place at Le Theatre de Châtelet in Paris for an audience reclining on mattresses: A particular production for a unique show, which has had much success and an enthusiastic reception by both the press the public. The Crossing the Line performances of At the Beginning, Monteverdi will be staged in Le Skyroom, FIAF’s intimate rooftop venue, replete with seating that will include mattresses, sofas, and cushions.

Sonia Wieder-Atherton, a French cellist born in 1961 in San Francisco, is acknowledged to be one of the most powerful and insightful of contemporary musicians. A winner of the Competition Rostropovitch in 1986 and the recipient of the Grand Prix del Duca de l’Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1999. While Sonia Wieder-Atherton regularly performs almost the entirety of the classical and contemporary repertory for cello–and is a well-regarded interpreter of the works of composers such as Pascal Dusapin, George Aperghis, Henry Dutilleux, Betsy Jolas, and Ivan Fedele–she is also known for her ability to conceive and execute unique and personal programs.
