Angelin Preljocaj’s ’L’Annonciation’ by Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet
The up-and-coming American troupe Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet will present a new staging of “L’Annonciation”, choreographed by Angelin Preljocaj. Created in 1995, this renowned work for two dancers won the New York Dance & Performance "Bessie" Award in New York when first presented in 1996, and has since been added to the repertoires of the Ballet de l’Opéra de Paris and the Teatro alla Scala, Milan.
In “L’Annonciation,” the Virgin Mary encounters an androgynous and strangely fascinating Archangel Gabriel, who tells her that she is carrying the Messiah. Preljocaj, a highly regarded French choreographer whose parents emigrated from Albania, was awarded the Legion of Honor in 1998. His company has toured extensively in the U.S. since 1995 and he was commissioned by the New York City Ballet in 1997.
