Encounter(s) with Marie Ndiaye

Marie Ndiaye is a French novelist and playwright. She started writing when she was about 12 or 13 years old and was only 18 when her first work Quant au riche avenir [As for the rich future] was published and she won the Prix Fémina in 2001 for her novel Rosie Carpe.

Her play Papa doit manger has been taken into the repertoire of the Comédie Française. Since then new books have confirmed her talent, as has the fertility of her quirky imagination, both of which set her apart as a writer in the contemporary landscape of French literature. But it was with her subsequent books, La femme changée en bûche [The woman turned into a log] (1989) and En famille [A family affair] (1991), that Ndiaye succeeded in imposing her frightening and unusual stories, admirably served by her subtle and powerful language. With a light touch, never breaking the thread of a masterfully controlled narrative, the author makes a case against post-industrial society in which the collapse of the family leads to the dehumanisation of people. Since all wandering is sterile and identity eternally mutable, Marie Ndiaye’s writing seeks, in the aesthetics of its style and the sparkle of her imagination, an antidote to the chaos of the world.
