Short films by Georges Franju 1934-1952

Co-founder (with Henri Langlois) of the Cinémathèque Française, George Franju is now best known as the director of the poetic 1959 horror film Eyes Without a Face. But before he made that “face-transplant” shocker, he made a series of acclaimed, surreal, subversive documentaries.

But before he made that “face-transplant” shocker, he made a series of acclaimed, surreal, subversive documentaries. The Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque show a selection of them this month, in rare prints from France. Program includes: Le Grand Méliès (1952), a biography of the celebrated trick-film pioneer George Méliès (here played by his son André); La Première Nuit (1958), in which a schoolboy descends into the Paris Metro and has subway-inspired dreams; Hôtel des Invalides (1952), a seemingly innocuous tour of the French War Museum that turns into a scathing denunciation of combat; and (hopefully) Blood of the Beasts (Le Sang des Bêtes, 1949), another subversive study in contrasts that explores another French institution in this case, a slaughterhouse.
