Non-Commercial Distribution Online: Universciné

In collaboration with Le Meilleur du Cinéma Français company, the French Embassy is offering an Internet portal that enables Universities and Cultural Centers to access films online and to organize public screenings more easily accross the US.

More than 60 feature-length films are available in the US, most of which figured among the most prominent French independent films in the last few years. Please click here for the movies list.

How to Apply for Universciné

  • And return it to the Audiovisual Services of your location. To find your local office, click here.

Important: The rights that the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs holds on these movies are exclusively for non-commercial public projections. The use of these movies as a tool for the teaching of the French language is solely permitted if they are screened in their entirety.

How to Download Movies

  • Log-in, using your username and password, to access the movie catalogue offered by Universcine.
  • Browse the catalogue, pick the movie of your choice and click télécharger
  • When the service is used for the first time and before the selected movie is actually downloaded, a program named Video Manager is automatically downloaded and installed. It allows you to sort and play the documents you download.
  • The download starts automatically. Because it takes several hours to download a movie (between 6 and 10 hours) we recommend downloading it overnight.
  • Once the download is complete, the program downloads the licence you need in order to play the movie.
  • You just need to click on lire for the video to begin. The button for full screen mode is located at the bottom right of the player.
  • The movies are stored on your hard drive for 1 month. After that, they are disabled and impossible to play.

How to Activate the Subtitles

  • When you decide to download the movie you selected, the software offers the option of downloading the relevant subtitles. It may happen that, even if you picked this option, the subtitles won’t appear when the movie is played for the first time.
  • Launch Video Manager which is downloaded and located, by default, on your desktop. Go to the Action tab and click Rechercher les sous-titres . Close the program.
  • Launch Windows Media Player, go to lecture , then légendes et sous-titres and click on activer si possible.
  • Close Windows Media Player, launch Video Manager again and click on lire la vidéo.
  • The subtitles are activated.
